We are delighted that young cello virtuoso, Rowena Calvert, joins DECO to play Haydn Cello Concerto in C in our "Unfinished Business" Concert on October 2nd.

Rowena Calvert Biography:

A year after beginning the cello with her Father, Rowena began her musical education at St Mary's Music School, Edinburgh, with Ruth Beauchamp.
After her Queens Hall debut when she was twelve years old, several concerto opportunities and masterclasses from masters including Steven Isserlis and Steven Doane, Rowena transferred to the Yehudi Menuhin School when she was thirteen to study with Leonid Gorokhov. It was here that several partnerships were formed with pianists that were seen to perform in venues such as the Wigmore Hall, The Royal Festival Hall, Manchester Cello Festival, UK, Kronberg Cello Festival, Germany, and in the UNESCO Celebrations, Paris. When Rowena was eighteen she went to The Royal Academy of Music where she studied with Paul Watkins and was a string finalist of BBC Young Musicians 2002. Two years later Rowena moved to India where she helped run two music schools, performed a concerto on Indian Television, played a recital in The British Council and performed for the Sangat Western Classical Music Festival. On her return, Rowena resumed her studies at the Royal Northern College of Music with Hannah Roberts. Here she was the winner of the Busenhart Morgen Evans Award from the Worshipful Company of Musicians, the Tillett trust Education Award, The Haworth Trust award for Cellists, an Ian Fleming Award from the MBF, a Countess of Munster Star Award, The Jellineck Award, The Myra Hess Award, The Oglesby Education Award and a bow from the Scottish Arts Council. She has been fortunate to play concertos with the London Mozart Players, the Meadows Chamber Orchestra, the Harlow Symphony Orchestra, the Edinburgh Festival Orchestra, The Fairfield Halls Orchestra, The Worthing Philharmonic Orchestra, The Surrey Symphony Orchestra, The RNCM Symphony Orchestra, The Boyce Orchestra and the Covent Garden Actors Orchestra. Since leaving the RNCM, Rowena was invited to be a part of the Countess of Munster Recital Scheme. In this time she has also made her debut CD which includes works by Beethoven, Debussy and DeFalla.
Chamber Music
Rowena has always been a keen and active chamber musician who has enjoyed coaching from masters including Yehudi Menuhin, Mstislav Rostropovich and Ivry Gitlis. She has played extensively with various groups in venues such as the Wigmore Hall and the Lindbury Studio Theatre (Royal Opera House) with artists and chamber ensembles such as Nicola Benedetti, Emma Johnson MBE, David Juritz, The London Mozart Trio, The English Mozart Ensemble, the Nash Ensemble and the Medici Quartet. Chamber music concerts have taken her as far as Bangkok where her former piano trio were invited by the Royal Family to perform for the Princess of Thailand.
Quartet
The Harpham Quartet
In 2009 Rowena became a permanent member of the Harpham Quartet which had already established itself as a leading quartet of it's generation. Highlights for the Harpham Quartet include performing at the Royal Festival Hall, The Purcell Room, Fairfield Halls and the Moscow and Cadogan Halls. They have also performed at the 2008 BBC Proms Composer Portraits and as 2008 RCM Rising Stars. They have been selected for the Park Lane Concert Series and have broadcast on BBC radio 3. They have recently been selected as Junior Fellows for the Royal College of Music and have been awarded a full scholarship to study at the Instituto Internacional de Musica de Camera de Madrid in the Chamber music class of Guenter Pichler. They are looking forward to their Wigmore Hall debut in December this year.
Cello and Harp Duo
The Calvert - Turner Duo
Rowena and harpist Eleanor Turner formed the Calvert Turner duo in 2003. They have performed extensively throughout the UK in major festivals and on the radio. Their debut CD features music from around the globe as this unusual combination of instruments knows no boundaries. They perform their own compositions as well as premiering previously unplayed manuscripts. Their repertoire stretches from J. S. Bach to Ravi Shankar and it is their energy, exuberance and sensitivity that shines through the music they make that makes them an unforgettable and dynamic duo.
