As many readers will know, the Cathedral is in an experimental partnership with a professional Orchestra whose purpose is to ensure three performances of orchestral music every year in the Cathedral, and three orchestral contributions to the Cathedral's Sunday worship at high points in the liturgical year.
Those fortunate enough to be present in the Cathedral for the inaugural performance of the Darwin Ensemble Chamber Orchestra will no doubt share my excitement at the prospect of more inspiring concerts to come.
For, without doubt, the quality of their offering, before an enraptured audience exceeding three hundred, was matched only by the majesty of this graceful, historic building. No wonder that these talented musicians, under the skilful direction of conductor Philip Scriven, received a standing ovation at the end of an entertaining and well-balanced programme of Mozart and Beethoven.

 DECO - The Darwin Ensemble Concert Orchestra has now arrived!
Lichfield Cathedral Chapter has generously donated the use of the Cathedral to host 3 concerts in 2009 : January 31, May 2 and September 26
The Orchestra will perform well known and popular Classical music, including, this year, Beethoven Symphony no 1, and Vivaldi's 4 Seasons
The artistic Director is Alexander Laing, the conductor is Philip Scriven. Anna Ambrose and Meredith Thompson are also involved in the day to day running of the Orchestra.
Funding for the Orchestra is being sought from Charitable Trusts and from corporate and personal sponsorship.
Please get in touch if you feel you can help this venture financially, whether by a donation or by becoming a "friend". Formal requests for sponsorship will appear soon. In the meantime Alexander Laing will supply more information on request. |

 The Darwin Ensemble String Quartet will accompany ballroom dancers at the Lichfield Garrick Theatre on New Year’s Day.
There will be a concert in the theatre - in the style of the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Celebration, and before and at the interval the DESQ will provide live music for professional dancers to waltz to. |

 On Thursday 28th February, the Darwin Ensemble String Quartet took part in a Schools' Composition Workshop in collaboration with Kenneth Dempster, Composer in residence at the Ian Tomlin School of Music, Napier University. The event was supported by the Friends of the Music of St Giles' Cathedral.
